In brief: Gov’t reaches agreement with Mexico City metro workers

*The head of the Mexico City (CDMX) metro system, Adrián Rubalcava, has announced that an agreement has been reached with metro workers’ trade union, Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores del Sistema de Transporte Colectivo (SNTSTC) following a partial strike by workers over a lack of maintenance and investment in the system. Rubalcava said the agreement was made after hours of dialogue and centred on strengthening maintenance of the metro system, reinforcing joint efforts to deliver a better service, and generating working conditions “that recognise the great effort that workers are making every day”. Rubalcava said that the safety of users continues to be “our utmost priority”, stating that normal services would fully resume as of today (14 April). In a statement released yesterday, the SNTSTC thanked the mayor of CDMX, Clara Brugada, for “the demonstrated willingness to address the needs” of workers by opening the dialogue with Rubalcava. It said its main demands were the establishment of a “sufficient budget that guarantees the full maintenance of trains, tracks, and fixed installations”, as well as attention to previously made labour proposals. The strikes, which coincided with the return to school and work after the Easter break, led to long delays on many metro lines and congestion in metro stations.
