ECUADOR-COLOMBIA: Noboa doubles tariff rate as Petro dispute escalates

There had been signs last month that Colombia was taking steps to address Ecuadorean concerns about crime in the border region which have prompted Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa to level high tariffs against his northern neighbour in late January. However, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro poured fuel on the fire on 6 April when he described the incarcerated former Ecuadorean vice president Jorge Glas (2013-2017) as a “political prisoner”. In response, Ecuador recalled its ambassador from Bogotá and later doubled its tariff rate for Colombia to 100%.
