PARAGUAY: Rift in ruling party ahead of elections

There are signs that Paraguay’s ruling party is succumbing to infighting shortly before municipal elections that are expected to function like a plebiscite on the government led by President Santiago Peña, and to provide a key marker ahead of presidential elections early in 2028. Amid mounting public disillusionment, heightened by a surge in fuel prices as a result of the war in Iran, key figures within the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) have taken aim at the Peña administration in what looks like an attempt to distance the party from some of its actions to try and mitigate electoral repercussions.
