*The governments of the Dominican Republic and Haiti have agreed to reopen airspace between the two countries next month. This
has been closed in response to the unprecedented gang attacks in March 2024 in Haiti which ultimately forced out former prime minister
Ariel Henry (2021-2024). The agreement to reopen air space was announced following a meeting on 17 April by foreign ministry delegations from both countries at the Codevi industrial park in Ouanaminthe, a border town in Haiti’s Nord-Est department. A statement by the Dominican Republic’s foreign ministry (Mirex) notes that the main aspects of the bilateral agenda were discussed, with “
particular emphasis on border security… migration issues as well as trade”, with the reopening of airspace aimed at “
facilitating mobility, dynamising economic links and strengthening relations between the two countries”. The statement also cites the two delegations as “
thanking the international community for its backing of efforts aimed at supporting Haitian authorities pacify the country”, singling out in particular the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), which was approved last year by the United Nations Security Council and the first major deployment of which
arrived this month.
