In brief: Mexico’s foreign minister discusses EU trade deal in Brussels

*Mexico’s newly appointed foreign minister, Roberto Velasco Álvarez, has announced that he is in Brussels, Belgium, to continue talks about the modernised global agreement (MGA) between Mexico and the European Union (EU). In his first trip abroad following his ratification as foreign minister on 8 April, Velasco accompanied President Claudia Sheinbaum at a summit of progressive world leaders in Barcelona, Spain, before travelling to Brussels to meet with EU officials. Negotiations on the MGA concluded in January 2025. The agreement will lift non-tariff barriers between the two countries and reduce tariffs on many mainly agricultural products, among other things. While the countries had hoped to ratify the MGA in the first quarter of this year, this has yet to materialise.
