Claudia Sheinbaum has received a US delegation headed up by US Trade Representative (USTR)
Jamieson Greer to discuss the review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In a social media post, Sheinbaum said discussions were progressing
“positively”. Prior to meeting Greer, Sheinbaum had said that Mexico hoped to reach a
“preliminary agreement” before completing the USMCA review on steel, aluminium, and vehicles, although no further details were given following the meeting. Greer also met with Mexico’s Economy Minister
Marcelo Ebrard, with the pair agreeing to hold the first official bilateral negotiating round for the USMCA review the week of 25 May in Mexico City (CDMX). In a statement, the Office of the USTR said both Greer and Ebrard had directed their teams
“to advance important technical discussions this week on economic security and complementary trade actions, strengthened rules of origin for key industrial goods, collaboration on critical minerals, and to resolve outstanding bilateral trade irritants”.
