Peru’s presidential election descends into farce
Peru’s presidential election is growing more chaotic by the day. While it looks like the left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez has done enough to finish in second place and proceed to a run-off against right-wing rival Keiko Fujimori on 7 June, the right-wing populist in third place, Rafael López Aliaga, is refusing to accept defeat. López Aliaga, the former mayor of Lima, has organised rallies condemning electoral fraud, first demanding that the elections be re-run and now calling for complementary elections. Meanwhile, the country’s two electoral authorities are at loggerheads, leading to an unprecedented situation where the president of one was forced to resign in the midst of the electoral process.
