*Cuba’s national statistics office (Onei) has released new figures showing that the country received a total of 298,057 international tourists in the first quarter of 2026, down 48% on the same period in 2025. This comes as the US administration led by President
Donald Trump continues to apply
massive pressure to the island through a fuel blockade, among other measures, which has exacerbated the country’s multifaceted economic crisis and resulted in countries including
Canada and
Russia, key sources of tourism, suspending flights. Of the total, Canada accounted for 124,794 tourists in the first quarter of 2026, down 54.2% on the same period in 2025, while Russia accounted for 20,917 tourists (-37.5%). The US accounted for 17,034 international tourists (-56.8%), followed by Argentina (12,212, -0.5%), and Mexico (9,520, -17.8%). The country received a total of 1.81m international tourists
in 2025, down 18% on 2024. Bloomberg reported that this was the lowest figure in over two decades bar 2020-2022 when tourism was largely shut down due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
