*The Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (Conab), the logistics arm of Brazil’s agrarian development ministry, has released its first estimate for the 2026/2027 sugar cane harvest cycle, projecting a total of 709.1m tonnes (t). This would mark a 5.3% increase compared to the 2025/2026 sugar cane harvest and would be the second highest production figure on record. Conab noted in a press release that climate conditions had improved in 2025, which is expected to benefit the 2026/2027 cycle. The country’s main sugar cane producing region, the southeast, is projected to register a total harvest of 459.1m t in the next harvest cycle, which would be up 6.8% compared to the 2025/2026 harvest. Conab’s figures also show that the production of ethanol – from both sugar cane and maize – could total 40.69bn litres in 2026/2027, which would be up 8.5% on the previous harvest. Ethanol from sugar cane is forecast to total 29.26bn litres, up 7.1%. However, Conab projects that sugar could register a slight reduction of 0.5% compared to the previous cycle, with sugar production expected to drop to 43.95m t in 2026/2027.
