*Venezuela’s government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with British oil firm BP regarding offshore gas exploration. BP’s vice president for gas and low carbon energy,
William Lin, said that the company will open a permanent office in Caracas. He highlighted exploration plans on the offshore Plataforma Deltana oil and gas field and said that BP will partner with Venezuela’s state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) in exploration and development at the Loran-Manatee gas field. Both fields span the maritime border between Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago, where BP already operates. This was the latest deal struck between the Venezuelan government and an international energy company in the wake of the
hydrocarbon reform passed in January, following recent agreements with Italy’s
Eni, Spain’s
Repsol, and US firm
Chevron.
