Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered another blow to the powerful Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) on 27 April. The arrest of Audías Flores Silva (‘El Jardinero’), an alleged top CJNG commander, as well as his alleged financial operator, comes just two months after security forces killed the cartel’s leader, Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Rubén Oseguera Cervantes [WR-26-08]. Sheinbaum hailed the arrests as evidence of the strengthening of intelligence and investigation work under her government. The results will no doubt be used to demonstrate to US President Donald Trump that Mexico has a handle on its security situation, coming as tensions have flared in the past week over the alleged participation of US security agents in an anti-cartel operation in Chihuahua state.
