Violence erupts in Cauca as Petro talks security with Rodríguez

Colombian media described a 25 April mortar attack on the Pan-American highway as one of the country’s worst terror attacks in decades. The explosion, in the south-western department of Cauca, left 20 people dead and around 50 others injured. It was the worst in a wave of attacks carried out over the past week by the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) guerrilla alliance. Intelligence officials are reportedly considering whether the violence was ordered to avenge the girlfriend of the EMC’s leader, Néstor Gregorio Vera Fernández (‘Iván Mordisco’).
