*Brazil’s federal police (PF) has launched a new phase of its investigation into alleged fraud and corrupt activities linked to the controversial bank Banco Master, a high-profile case which has shone a spotlight on the
possible connections between bankers and Brazil’s political establishment. According to a statement from the supreme court (STF), this new phase of the police operation will focus on alleged ties between the CEO of Banco Master,
Daniel Vorcaro, and Senator
Ciro Nogueira, the national party president of the conservative Progressistas party (PP), who served as chief of staff from 2021-2022 in the administration of former president
Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). According to the STF statement, authorities suspect that Nogueira received
“undue advantages” for his alleged efforts to adjust legislation to favour Banco Master. Police investigators allege that Vorcaro handed Nogueira envelopes in November 2023 containing draft legislation, suggesting that he might have been directly instructing the senator on what reforms he would like to be passed to benefit Banco Master. Nogueira is also believed to have received payments and enjoyed flights on private jets and hotel and restaurant bookings which Vorcaro had paid for. STF justice
André Mendonça, the presiding judge of the Banco Master investigation, has banned Nogueira and other suspects implicated in the probe from contacting one another. Mendonça also issued a temporary arrest warrant for
Felipe Cançado Vorcaro, the cousin of the Banco Master CEO, who was allegedly involved as an intermediary to deliver payments and other perks to Nogueira.
