In brief: Industrial production down in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has reported a 0.6% fall in industrial activity in March 2026 compared with February and a 1.5% drop in yearly terms. This follows a 0.4% monthly increase in February and a 1.1% decrease in January. The annual drop compares to a drop of 1.3% in February and 0.1% in January. The monthly decrease in the index of industrial activity (Imai) was driven by a fall of 3.3% in construction and a 0.2% drop in manufacturing industries. This was offset somewhat by a 0.3% increase in utilities (electricity generation and transmission, provision of water and gas) and a 1.7% rise in mining. In yearly terms, construction was down 5.3%, while manufacturing dropped 1.6%. Utilities rose 0.3% year-on-year while mining was up 5.8%.
