*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for its consumer price index (Ipca), which showed a monthly inflation rate of 0.67% for April and an annual rate of 4.39%. This monthly figure is lower than the 0.88% inflation registered for the previous month, but the annual figure marks an acceleration compared to 4.14% in the 12 months through March. All nine categories of products and services saw monthly price increases in April this year, with the highest inflation in food and drinks (+1.34%), household items (+0.65%), and housing (+0.63%). In a press release, the Ibge attributed the rise in food prices to factors such as drier weather conditions, which has reduced the productivity of cattle grazing pastures, resulting in lower supply and higher prices for milk, as well as the impact of the global rise in fuel prices, which has increased food transport costs. This comes despite the slowdown in inflation in the transport category, which posted a 1.64% monthly inflation rate in March but only 0.06% in April, although this was mainly driven by a significant decrease in airfares in April compared to March (-14.45%). Fuel prices in April rose by 1.80% in monthly terms, with gasoline prices up 1.86%, diesel up by 4.46%
, and ethanol prices rising by 0.62%.
