Bolivia’s former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) once again threw down the gauntlet to the authorities on 11 May when he failed to appear in court to face charges of human trafficking. Morales, who for the past 18 months has been holed up in Chapare, Cochabamba department, under the protection of his coca union, has further raised the stakes by sending his supporters marching on the capital La Paz.
