BRAZIL: Supreme court deals blow to right-wing lawmakers

Tensions between Brazil’s supreme court (STF) and right-wing members of congress have escalated recently. Not only has STF justice Alexandre de Moraes suspended a major legislative priority for the far-right ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement, a bill to reduce the jail time of those convicted in relation to the Brasília riots on 8 January 2023, but also STF justice André Mendonça has authorised police investigations into Senator Ciro Nogueira, the national president of the conservative Progressistas party (PP), who is suspected of gaining financial benefits for allegedly having amended legislation to favour the controversial bank Banco Master.
