In brief: Bolivia’s labour minister replaced amid protests

*Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz has appointed Williams Bascopé as his new labour minister, replacing Edgar Morales who had been in the role since Paz took office in November 2025. The change comes amid serious anti-government protests and after Paz announced on 20 May that he would be “reordering” his cabinet in response to the crisis. On the same day Paz also announced the creation of a new socio-economic council to analyse the problems facing the country. Bascopé, who is a lawyer, used his inauguration speech to highlight his indigenous roots in a possible attempt to reach out to the protest movement. “The person speaking to you is from La Paz, is Aymara, and I ask God to show us the way, because this country deserves to work and we need to move forwards through dialogue,” he said.
