BOLIVIA: Paz inches towards military deployment to control unrest

After weeks of escalating protests against his government, with highways blocked around Bolivia and the situation drawing growing international alarm, President Rodrigo Paz is considering resorting to the most powerful tool in his arsenal. On 26 May he promulgated a bill that removes restrictions on his ability to declare a state of exception, which would enable the deployment of troops to subdue the unrest.
