*Mexico and the US have concluded the first round of bilateral negotiations related to the review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which
took place in Mexico City (CDMX) from 28-29 May. In a statement, Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) said the negotiations had taken place
“in a constructive atmosphere marked by frank dialogue”. The SE stated that priority issues were reviewed including rules of origin for the automotive sector, steel and aluminium, and the region’s economic security.
“Mexico reiterated that the treaty’s strength lies in the integration of its value chains and in the rules that have made North America the most competitive manufacturing platform in the world,” stated the SE. The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) stated that the countries also recognised
“the importance of advancing cooperation to enhance regulatory compatibility to strengthen sectors, including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cosmetic products, and others”. The next round of bilateral talks will take place from 16-17 June in Washington D.C. with a final round scheduled for the week of 20 July in CDMX.
