Donald Trump has said that Washington might not renew the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which he forged in 2020 during his first administration (2017-2021), and which is up for review this year, with an initial deadline of 1 July. Speaking at the White House, Trump said “
I don’t know that I’m going to renew it… We don’t need anything that Canada has. We don’t need anything that Mexico has, but they need everything that we have, and they have to treat us better…. with Mexico and Canada we have trade deficits… we should have surpluses with them… we don’t need their cars, we don’t need their lumber, we don’t need their energy, we don’t need anything that they have”. With the future of the three-way deal already looking uncertain as there has been no formal launch of negotiations with Canada, the US and Mexico concluded the first round of bilateral negotiations in relation to the upcoming USMCA review
on 29 May. The next round of bilateral talks will take place from 16-17 June in Washington D.C. with a final round scheduled for the week of 20 July in Mexico City (CDMX). The Mexican and Canadian governments have yet to publicly comment on Trump’s latest remarks.
