In brief: Mexico’s gov’t hails tourism numbers

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the country received a “historic record” number of foreign visitors in the first four months of 2026. Sheinbaum presented figures recently released by the national statistics institute (Inegi) showing that 3.81m international tourists visited Mexico in April, up 1.8% year-on-year, and 1.25m cruise passengers, up 31.5%. This brought the total number of international visitors between January and April 2026 to 34.5m, including 16.5m tourists (up 5.5% year-on-year) and 4.88m cruise passengers (up 13%). According to Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, total visitor spending reached US$13.3bn. Rodríguez added that according to Inegi, in the first quarter of 2026, 5.2m people were employed in the tourism sector, representing 51,000 more people than in 2025.
