EL SALVADOR: Sparks start to fly in presidential campaign

The ruling Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) is resorting to mudslinging in the campaign for next March's presidential elections. This is a good sign for the opposition Frente Farabundo Martí­ para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), whose candidate, Mauricio Funes, remains out front in opinion polls. Normally, it is the FMLN which indulges in mudslinging because it is unable to catch Arena. The role reversal suggests that Arena is increasingly rattled by the strength of the challenge posed by Funes.
