VENEZUELA: Rescue efforts underway after devastating earthquakes

Two powerful earthquakes hit northern Venezuela on 24 June, devastating the coastal state of La Guaira and potentially causing tens of thousands of deaths. The full extent of the disaster remained unclear at the time of writing but the destruction is wide-ranging, with buildings collapsing in the capital Caracas, some 300km from the earthquakes’ epicentres in Yaracuy state.
