*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the unemployment figures from the rolling quarter of March-May 2026, showing an unemployment rate of 5.6%, which is equivalent to 6.1m people. This is down from 5.8% registered for the rolling quarter of December 2025-February 2026, and 6.2% registered for March-May 2025. The latest March-May unemployment rate is also the lowest figure on record for the period. Meanwhile, the total employed population in March-May this year stood at 102.7m people, up 0.5% on the preceding rolling quarter and up 0.8% year-on-year. The Ibge highlighted in a press release that the decrease in unemployment in the latest rolling quarter could be due to seasonal factors, as this is the period when various sectors begin looking toward the second half of the year and might be hiring more staff, but also suggested that the record-low unemployment rate for March-May could indicate a structural trend of expansion and increased activity in the labour market.
