*Mexico’s President
Claudia Sheinbaum has nominated
Esteban Moctezuma, the former ambassador to the US (2021-2026), as Mexico’s new ambassador to the European Union (EU), Belgium, and Luxembourg. Moctezuma’s main mission will be to coordinate the political and diplomatic process to secure the ratification of the modernised global agreement (MGA) between Mexico and the EU,
which was signed on 22 May by Sheinbaum, the president of the European Commission,
Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council,
António Costa. Following this, Moctezuma will then be tasked with
“coordinating a strategy with the various European Union member states aimed at increasing trade, generating new investments, and taking full advantage of all the opportunities this agreement offers our country”, according to Mexico’s foreign ministry (SRE). The MGA comes as both Mexico and the EU are looking to diversify trade relations amid uncertainty generated by US President
Donald Trump’s trade policies. Moctezuma, a previous interior minister (1994-1995), social development minister (1998-1999), senator (1997-2000), and education minister (2018-2021), must be ratified by the senate before taking up the role.
