*Brazil’s President
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has launched new measures aimed at supporting workers in the informal sector. He created a new scheme called ‘Desenrola Adimplentes’, an expansion of the government’s ‘Desenrola’ debt renegotiation programme, the latest iteration of which was
launched in May this year. Under the new scheme, workers in informal employment will gain more favourable conditions for subsidised credit to refinance existing debts. At a maximum interest rate of 1.99% per month, workers with outstanding debts of up to R$15,000 (US$2,900) per financial institution would be eligible for subsided credit. In addition to expanding the Desenrola programme, Lula announced a new credit line, dubbed ‘Fies Empreendedor’, which aims to provide credit for self-employed entrepreneurs, who are not classified as formally employed workers, helping them to repay their loans from the government’s student financing fund (Fies).
