In brief: Mexico, among others, sends aid to Venezuela

*Mexico’s government has announced that two logistics support ships, Isla Holbox and Huasteco, have set sail for Venezuela, carrying 2,003m3 of humanitarian aid in response to the two earthquakes which devastated northern coastal states on 24 June. Venezuela continues to receive other aid from countries such as Argentina, whose government announced yesterday that a second group of rescuers from Argentina’s armed forces had been deployed, as well as sending 16 tonnes (t) of aid comprising medical supplies and other provisions. Also yesterday, the Colombian government announced via its disaster risk management unit (UNGRD) and health ministry that it was sending a field hospital to Venezuela that would operate for two and a half months. In an update yesterday, Jorge Rodrígurez, the president of Venezuela’s national assembly, put the death toll from the earthquakes at 3,342, with 16,740 injured, while 6,462 people have been rescued and 17,345 people have been left homeless. In his report, Rodríguez said that 9,585 t of food had been distributed, and put the number of international rescue workers at 4,088. Yesterday, Venezuela’s President Delcy Rodríguez announced the launch of a platform named ‘Gran Misión Venezuela Renace’ (Great Mission for Venezuela’s Rebirth) which she said would unite social and international programmes with the support of 10 key economic motors, prioritising essential sectors such as banking, construction, the pharmaceutical industry, and the food sector. She announced the creation of a special fund, ‘Venezuela Renace’, aimed at rebuilding homes and infrastructure damaged by the earthquakes, and revealed plans to assign a monthly handout over the next six months to mitigate the socio-economic impact for affected families. She also announced that she had instructed the defence ministry to create a military disaster-response task force named ‘Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, Antonio José de Sucre’.
