*Cuba’s state power company, Unión Eléctrica (UNE), has announced a nationwide blackout in Cuba, the third in 10 days, having previously
suffered outages on 6 and 10 July. The blackout is the fifth
complete outage this year and the 10
th since October 2024, on international media reports. UNE said that yesterday’s electricity supply stood at 1,020 megawatts (MW) at peak time while maximum demand was 3,150MW, creating a deficit of 2,130 MW. It came as the US administration led by President
Donald Trump continues to apply a maximum pressure campaign on Cuba via a crippling oil blockade, among other things, which has left the country without fuel oil and diesel, as part of efforts to push Cuba to make economic and political reforms.
