*Cuba’s state power company, Unión Eléctrica (UNE), has announced a nationwide blackout in Cuba, the third in 10 days, having previously suffered outages on 6 and 10 July. The blackout is the fifth complete outage this year and the 10^th since October 2024, on international media reports. UNE said that yesterday’s electricity supply stood at 1,020 megawatts (MW) at peak time while maximum demand was 3,150MW, creating a deficit of 2,130 MW. It came as the US administration led by President Donald Trump continues to apply a maximum pressure campaign on Cuba via a crippling oil blockade, among other things, which has left the country without fuel oil and diesel, as part of efforts to push Cuba to make economic and political reforms.
