Mexico City (CDMX) is less affected by the violence that the country’s largest cartels, the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and Cártel de Sinaloa, provoke in other areas of the country. Instead, violence in the city has been fuelled by local criminal groups, such as the Unión Tepito and, to a lesser extent, its rival Fuerza Anti-Unión Tepito and the Cártel de Tláhuac. Authorities have waged effective crackdowns on these groups in recent years, limiting their power and bringing down violent crime rates.
