In brief: Corruption sentence overturned for Peru’s former president Humala
*Peru’s constitutional court (TC) has accepted an appeal by former president Ollanta Humala (2011-2016) against a 15-year prison sentence for money laundering which was imposed in April 2025. The TC ruled that in Humala’s case there had been a “violation of the principles of legality and typicality in relation to the right to personal freedom” and annulled “the whole criminal process” against him. Humala last year became the second former president to be sentenced for receiving bribes from the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht (now Novonor), following the conviction of Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) in October 2024.
