In brief: Chile’s unemployment rate remains high
*Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest unemployment figures, which showed that unemployment in the rolling quarter of April-June 2026 stood at 9.4%, equivalent to 980,270 people. This is equal to the unemployment rate recorded in the March-May rolling quarter and up from 9.1% in February-April. In year-on-year terms, the latest figure also marks an increase compared to the unemployment rate of 8.9% registered for April-June 2025. Chile’s total labour force, which stood at 10.38m people in April-June this year, increased by 1.5% over 12 months, while the total number of formally employed people, which stood at 9.40m people, increased by a slower rate of 0.9%. The rise in formal employment was driven by growth in the sectors of transport (6.8%), administrative and support services (12.9%), and health activities (5.1%). The number of unemployed people rose by 7.7% year-on-year, driven by those seeking working for the first time (9.8%). The informality rate stood at 27.0%, which marked a one-percentage-point increase compared to April-June 2025 and was equal to the immediately preceding quarter.
