Brazil’s diplomatic spats with US and Argentina escalate
Tensions between Brazil and two of its main trade partners, the US and Argentina, escalated this week. The US decided on 4 August to revoke the visa of the Brazilian ambassador in Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. On the same day, the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva downgraded ties with Argentina and informed the Argentine ambassador in Brasília, Guillermo Daniel Raimondi, that he may return to Buenos Aires. This comes as US President Donald Trump and Argentina’s President Javier Milei have ramped up their support in recent weeks for Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who is expected to be the primary right-wing challenger to Lula’s re-election bid this year [WR-26-30].
