In brief: Annual inflation continues to slow in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures for its consumer price index, showing a monthly inflation rate of 0.03% in July, while annual inflation stood at 3.12%. This compares to monthly deflation of 0.27% in June and 0.21% in May. However, annual inflation is down from 3.37% in June and 3.94% in May. With this, annual inflation has remained within the central bank (Banxico)’s target of 3% ± 1.0 percentage point and represents the lowest annual rate since May 2020. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, stood at 0.23% in monthly terms and 3.95% in annual terms. The latest figures come as Banxico held its benchmark interest rate at 6.50% for the second consecutive occasion on 6 August.
