*Honduras’ President Nasry Asfura has said that his right-wing Partido Nacional (PN) government is prepared to review energy reform proposals suggested by different political parties in order to construct legislation aimed at improving the state power company, Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica (Enee). This follows the government’s presentation in May of an energy reform package submitted to the PN-controlled 128-member unicameral legislature which aims to address Honduras’ troubled electricity sector. The proposed reform package is still being discussed, having so far passed only two of the three necessary debates. Key proposed changes including splitting up Enee, which has controlled the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity in Honduras since the 1950s, into three entities to handle generation, transmission and distribution separately. Enee has long reported massive financial losses, which yesterday Asfura put at L50m (US$1.86m) on a daily basis. His government’s proposed reform has received international backing but sparked concerns from the left-wing opposition Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party that it will pave the way for Enee's privatisation.
