In brief: Peru’s exports down in June

*Peru’s national statistics institute (Inei) has announced that the country’s exports fell by 4.6% year-on-year in June. This was primarily due to a 9.4% fall in traditional exports, particularly fish products which declined by 67.8%. This may have been a consequence of the El Niño climate phenomenon, which is altering ocean temperatures and changing fish feeding patterns, sparking concerns about its impact on Peru's important fishing sector. Inei highlighted the “near total paralysation of anchoveta extraction”, with impacts on fish oil and fishmeal exports. The mining sector also saw a 10.3% drop in exports, with copper exports down by 21.5%, zinc by 35.9%, tin by 32.7%, and refined silver by 7.2%, due to lower demand in the US, China, and Canada. In contrast, imports in June were up 19.7% year-on-year. Across the first six months of 2026, accumulated exports were up by 3.9% while accumulated imports were up by 17.6%.
