In brief: Argentina’s trade surplus widens year-on-year

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the trade figures for July, showing a monthly trade surplus of US$2.12bn. This is slightly down from the surplus of US$2.19bn in June and down from US$3.45bn in May but up from the US$907m surplus registered in July 2025. This brings the total trade surplus for the first seven months of 2026 to US$16.08bn, up from the surplus of US$3.67bn in the same period of 2025. Exports in July this year totalled US$8.85bn, up 14.1% year-on-year, while the monthly import value stood at US$6.74bn, down 1.7% on the same month last year. The rise in exports was mainly driven by the increase in energy and fuels, which was up 97.8% year-on-year at US$1.51bn, as well as rises in industrial manufactured goods, with an export value of US$2.17bn (+11.2%) and agricultural manufactured goods, registering a value of US$3.07bn (+4.9%). Meanwhile, exports of primary products were down 0.6% year-on-year, with a value of US$2.11bn.
