In brief: El Salvador’s Bukele announces education investment

*El Salvador’s authoritarian President Nayib Bukele has announced that his government plans to invest over US$3bn in education, which he says is “more than triple that invested by previous governments”, and equivalent to 8% of El Salvador’s GDP. Bukele, who in December announced a partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) firm xAI to use AI tools in public schools throughout the country, made his comments at an event held at football stadium Estadio Nacional Jorge ‘El Mágico’ González in San Salvador, attended by thousands of students. At the same event he also announced 50,000 scholarships for young people in higher and technical education this year which would be financed via an agreement worth US$100m with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
