ECONOMIC OVERVIEW: PANAMA

Although the Central American Bank for Economic Intergration (CABEI) suggests that Panama's real annual GDP growth could halve this year (it was an estimated 9.2% in 2008), the country will still enjoy the fastest growth in the region, of between 4.7% and 5.7% in 2009. Growth is underpinned by the project to widen the Panama Canal and the strength, generally, of the construction industry. In 2007 real GDP rose 11.5% annaully.
