In brief: Argentina to purchase armoured vehicles from US

*Argentina’s defence ministry has announced that it has made progress in the acquisition of 235 new Stryker armoured vehicles from the US. On 21 August Defence Minister Carlos Alberto Presti presided over the signing of a letter of offer and acceptance with the US, which paves the way for the acquisition of infantry transport, command, medical evacuation, and fire support vehicles for the Argentine army. According to the defence ministry, the acquisition “will take place under particularly favourable economic terms for Argentina, allowing for a significant expansion of the army’s capabilities through a transaction that is highly advantageous for the government”. The signing ceremony was attended by the chief of staff of Argentina’s army, Lieutenant General Oscar Santiago Zarich; the US ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas; and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Defense Exports and Cooperation Patrick Mason.
