*Chile’s deputy secretary for international economic relations, Paula Estévez, has met with the deputy representative of the US Trade Representative (USTR), Jeffrey Goettman, in Santiago to continue negotiations over tariffs that the US imposed on Chile, as well as 59 other economies, last month. According to a press release from Chile’s deputy ministry for international economic relations (Subrei), the two countries “are continuing to make progress in talks aimed at improving market access for Chilean exports to the US market, as part of the ongoing dialogue and negotiations… regarding the latest tariff measures”. Estévez previously announced in late July that the Chilean government was negotiating with the US to secure exemptions for a range of products from the 12.5% rate applied to the country due to what the US had found to be insufficient enforcement of forced labour import bans. During the latest talks, “the priorities of Chile’s export basket were reviewed and information was exchanged regarding the importance of these products both for the national economy and for the US market”. Regarding Goettman’s visit, Estévez said that it “demonstrates a willingness to continue working towards finding solutions” and that “we will continue to work constructively at both the political and technical levels, to identify areas where we can move towards mutually beneficial solutions”. A concluding meeting will be held today (25 August) where a roadmap for continuing negotiations is hoped to materialise.
