*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has announced that the unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2026 stood at 2.7% of the economically active population (PEA), up from 2.6% in Q1 and equal to the rate registered in Q2 2025. In the second quarter, the unemployed population totalled 1.6m people while the economically active population – referring to people aged 15 and over who are employed or seeking work – reached 61.7m people, up 612,000 people compared with Q2 2025. The employed population stood at 60.0m, up from 59.6m in Q1 and 59.4m a year earlier. Labour informality increased year-on-year, with the informality rate reaching 55.1% of employed people, up from 54.8% in Q2 2025. Underemployment, however, eased to 6.9% of the employed population from 7.2% a year earlier. By sector, trade accounted for 19.6% of employment, followed by manufacturing (16.2%), services (10.5%), and agriculture, livestock, forestry, hunting, and fishing (10.3%).
