*Honduras’ permanent contingency commission (Copeco), a government entity created to coordinate public and private disaster relief efforts, has announced that it is expanding the number of municipalities including under the state of emergency declared on 19 August to address the drought associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon. With the latest announcement, 103 municipalities (out of the country’s total 298) are now under the state of emergency, which allows the government to accelerate its response, up from 75 previously announced, while 82 municipalities are now placed on yellow alert, up from 71 previously announced. This is the latest response in the sub-region to the impact of El Niño which began in June and is expected to last into 2027, after Panama and El Salvador have both recently announced measures in response to its effects.
