*The office of Brazil’s solicitor general (AGU), the legal counsel of the federal government, has filed a lawsuit at a federal court in Brasília against the US social media platform Discord due to alleged non-compliance with Brazilian legislation aimed at protecting children in the online sphere. The AGU has demanded R$500m (US$97m) in compensation for “collective moral damages”. According to the Brazilian government, its monitoring system has produced more than 115 reports since 2025 of content on Discord that promoted suicide, self-harm, and animal abuse, among other types of harmful content. The lawsuit follows a case in July that made headlines across the world, in which a Brazilian teenager killed herself while on a livestream on Discord. The incident prompted the government to suspend Discord’s livestreaming feature earlier this month. The livestream was reportedly running for over two hours before Discord intervened to stop it. Media outlets such as state-owned news agency Agência Brasil have cited Discord as criticising the AGU for the lawsuit, slamming the move as “disproportionate” and highlighting that it is already engaging in dialogue with Brazilian authorities on how to improve child safety on the platform.
