Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected a new US migration policy that has seen thousands of Mexicans deported to other countries this year before being transferred to Mexico. The policy, which has increasingly been deployed by the administration of US President Donald Trump, has been in the spotlight following international media reports detailing the practice. The reports come as tensions are already running high between the US and Mexico over migration, following the deaths of at least 17 Mexican migrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody or operations since Trump took office in January 2025 [WR-26-28].
