*Argentina’s congress has ratified a trade agreement between Singapore and the Mercosur regional trade bloc, which was finalised in December 2023. Having been approved by the senate in May, the deal has now completed its national ratification in Argentina’s legislature, passing the lower chamber of congress yesterday with 234 votes in favour and only four against. Also yesterday, Argentina’s senate approved another Mercosur trade agreement, a free trade deal with the European Free Trade Association (Efta), comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, which the South American trade bloc signed in September last year. The Singapore deal signed in 2023 is the first trade agreement that Mercosur has closed with a Southeast Asian country, and the bloc is pursing deals with other countries in the region, such as Vietnam. On 26 August Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno hosted a delegation from Vietnam, which was in Buenos Aires to hold the first round of meetings to negotiate a potential Mercosur-Vietnam trade agreement.
