A month long strike that has paralysed the French Caribbean island of
Guadeloupe degenerated into rioting on the night of 16 February, when angry
crowds set cars alight and clashed with riot police in the towns of Sainte-Anne
and Point-a-Pitre. Strikes over low wages and the high cost of living on the
island began on 20 January, and have subsequently spread to neighbouring
Martinique. Public services, including schools, banks and government offices,
have been suspended and barricades around petrol stations and supermarkets have
resulted in fuel and food shortages on both islands.End of preview - This article contains approximately 407 words.
