GUYANA: Optimistic budget

Guyana's finance minister, Ashni Singh, presented the country's 2009 budget on 9 February; not unreasonably, the opposition immediately lampooned the government's projections as unrealistic. While private analysts are forecasting a sharp slowdown or even contraction in the country's economy this year, President Bharrat Jagdeo's government is predicting real annual GDP growth of 4.7% - an increase on an estimated 3.5% in 2008.
