HAITI: New massacre prompts international alarm, casts more doubt on electoral process
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting on 28 August to discuss the situation in Haiti, days after a massacre claimed at least 47 lives. The violence has sparked concerns about rising brutality by gangs, who control 90% of Port-au-Prince and large parts of the country. This persists despite the presence of the UNSC-authorised Gang Suppression Force (GSF), whose first deployment arrived in April. It is also raising major question marks about Haiti’s capacity to hold long-overdue elections now scheduled for December, in what would be the first vote in over a decade.
